The UK has a "chronic shortage" of social housing, according to a United Nations report.

The report, published by the UN’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, voiced concerns about Britain’s chronic shortage of housing, in particular social housing, for the most disadvantaged and marginalised individuals.

The committee called upon the UK Government to intensify its efforts to ensure that everyone has access to housing and to review policies and develop effective strategies aimed at increasing the levels of affordable housing in the report.

The committee was also troubled by that poverty, especially among children, remains widespread despite positive steps in this area.

The report added: The committee is also concerned that poverty levels vary considerably between and within regions and cities, as well as between different groups of society.
